You Bought MAGA Now, You'll Be Paying For It Later (Maybe Now)

The Schloss-Blog has been watching tariffs, their impact, threats of tariffs and their impact, trade negotiations and their (lack of) impact and has concluded that the impact is, will be, higher prices and definitely a lack of consumer confidence in the economy (inflation) and in the president's approval rating.

***

But we start with best thing I saw on social media this week: NYU Professor Scott Galloway; "I guess Melania’s dream of a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard is off the table."

***

Now then, back to the abnormal:  a Mexican Navy ship, in a training sail, hit the Brooklyn Bridge.

The freakin' Brooklyn Bridge.

What up, Mexico? One of your tall, training ships is in New York, doing training sails. What is up with that?

I mean, do U.S. tall training ships sail out of Mexican ports? Which ones?

But still, the ARM CuauhtĂ©moc hit the Brooklyn Bridge in the night on a training voyage that left two Mexican sailors dead.

And what is up with dangerous transportation in the U.S. these days? Newark Liberty Airport can't keep the lights on, so to speak, with air traffic controllers losing power - twice - leaving them virtually blind for 90 seconds at a time and leaving pilots in the air the same. It got so bad that some air traffic controllers, overwhelmed in anxiety, had to step away from their posts, too distraught to continue.

Why is all this happening during the current administration? Because the administration is cutting every budget it can find, leaving U.S. government agencies that are supposed to help people unable to do just that.

Trump is threatening more tariffs, against Apple (25%), unless they start building more iPhones in the U.S., and against the EU (50%), because they're not very nice.

No, jk - the trade negotiations with the EU are going nowhere, which means the president isn't getting the terms he wants to balance out the U.S. trade imbalance with the EU.

And he likely never will, as the EU is saying that any "deal" must be based on "respect, not tariffs."

As for Apple, experts caution that it would take as much as a decade to build up the manufacturing capacity necessary to hit the landmarks in production that the president wants.

Ain't gonna' happen.

Apple isn't afraid of the tariffs and knows its loyal customers will be happy to absorb any price increase tariffs cause rather than having to invest the overwhelming amounts necessary to build manufacturing facilities.

Looks like those Truth Social posts will be coming on a Samsung from now on.

Liam Hendricks, a Boston Red Sox pitcher, has been receiving death threats, he reports, againt himself and even his wife, mostly over recent performances that fans see as beyond disappointing.

Maybe they should stop losing so much money on fantasy baseball and other gambling avenues on what has been a mediocre Red Sox team so far this season.

In Arizona, four fifth-graders, 10- and 11-year olds, have been charged with plotting murder against another student, including a detailed plot to kill him, wipe the murder weapon clean and draft a note that would've made it look like a suicide.

At Legacy Traditional School West Surprise (Surprise, AZ), a Phoenix suburb, the alleged would-be murder suspects planned to lure the intended victim to an "outside" bathroom and commit the act.

Trump has said he will issue pardons for these poor, misguided kids whose parents, he notes, have done a great job raising them.

If that astounds you, in New York City, a crypto investor from Italy was kidnapped and tortured for weeks in a Manhattan townhouse in an elite neighborhood by other crypto traders who were trying to get his password to gain access to his crypto account.

No, really.

The man eventually escaped and actually ran down a New York City traffic officer, who helped alert police and his kidnapping abusers have been arrested.

They were charged, among other things, with being stupid.

**A 14th arrest since last July was made on gun-related charges in the parking lot of a Top Golf location in Naperville, Illinois. What is up with that?

**Speaking of, "What's up?" George Wendt passed away this week. He'll be missed. Chicago native. R.I.P. Known for his roles in Bears fans sketches and of course on "Cheers."

**NFL players in the Olympics in 2028, playing flag football. Justin Jefferson. Ja'marr Chase. Lamar Jackson. Who's going to beat them? NFL football and flag football are different animals, so be careful, NFL athletes. You can be beaten.

**Caitlin Clark is a great player who has changed how women's basketball is played and viewed. However, she does not get fouled on every time she misses a shot, as she would have fans and refs believe.

**R.I.P. to the Israel embassy staffers killed at a reception in Washington, D.C, in an ambush. We live in a crazy country in a crazy world. Crazy. Violence breaks out anywhere. Antisemitism is rampant.

We start with best thing I saw on social media this week: NYU Professor Scott Galloway, after Trump declared he would block international students from enrolling at Harvard: "I guess Melania’s dream of a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard is off the table."

Springsteen (Goes Off) In London and HoF Will Get Some (Late Guy) Inductees

The Schloss-Blog heard about Bruce Springsteen, touring in Europe with his E Street Band, going off about Trump while on stage in London.

Because he did.

***

More on that in a moment, but first, is it true, Melania has spent -what? - a total of  14 days at the White House.

That's 14 days since Trump moved back in ... in January.

I knew it - she's doing the gardener at Mar-a-Lago.

***

Been hearing that Trump has been making deals all over ...

...he has a deal to make a deal with England

...he has a deal to make deals with every Middle East country ever created (no, he doesn')

...and he has a deal to make a deal to have Melania move back into the White Hosue.

***

The NFL's 2025-26 schedule has dropped and everyone is abuzz about Sept. 4.

No, wait, they are?

***

Actually, Dallas is pretty hot right now.

The Mavericks, in a miracle - wink, wink - got the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft when, going in, the Mavericks had a 1.8% chance of getting it.

One. Point. Eight. Per. Cent.

Yeah, that was a Luka make-good, redemption for Nico Harrison and the Mavericks.

Also, Paige Beuckers, the No. 1 choice in the WNBA Draft, selected by the Dallas Wings, made a rousing debut.

OK, it wasn't rousing, but her team kinda' sucked last season and they'll need more than Paige Beuckers to get respectable again.

***

Wait, the only Middle East country Trump didn't make a deal with was Israel. He's already helping them destroy the property values in Gaza so he can turn into a resort beachfront.

***

Journalism won!

The Preakness.

Will there be another showdown with Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty, this time in the Belmont Stakes?

***

Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson are eligible for the Hall of Fame.

Who cares?

***

Oh yeah, Springsteen, in London, called Trump and his administration "...corrupt, incompetent and treasonous."

He also called it not good.

The Rehearsal Sucks, and I'll Miss the Righteous Gemstones

The Schloss-Blog invested a lot of time in HBO's "The Righteous Gemstones," the comedic parody of televangelist families, starring John Goodman, which concluded its four-season run last Sunday on HBO.

Excellent program but a somewhat weird fourth and final season and series-ending final episode.

"The Rehearsal," however, sucks. HBO allows this on the air. It totally sucks. I have to wait through it to get to "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" after "Righteous Gemstones," but it's so worth it for his sick twist on politics, life and ... more politics.

***

No sooner did Trump name Jeanine Pirro as the D.C. prosecuting attorney for DOJ than "Saturday Night Live" called in her longtime comedic impersonator, Cecily Strong, to make a drunken mockery of her.

Deservedly so and it was freaking hysterical.

***

"White Lotus." meanwhile, concluded its season as well, and was a blast to watch.

Walton Goggins (on your noggins) co-starred in that and "Righteous Gemstones" and stole almost every scoene he was in on both shows. Different storylines and totally different endings, but fun to watch. "White Lotus" ended almost predictably, although what you thought might happen to one character actually wound up happening to another.

And another.

Great fun. Great viewing.

Mike White, the "White Lotus" showrunner, has a wonderfully twisted mind. So does Danny McBride, who wrote and starred in all four of "The Rightgeous Gemstones' seasons, but did he ever screw it into the ground, so tightly that you couldn't take your eyes off it.

If you didn't see the finale of "White Lotus" and want to know what happened at the resort in Thailand to all the scheming characters, just click on the link.

If you're wondering the same about the religious televangelistas, the Gemstones, well, here's how Danny McBride wrapped that up.

So, does life imitate art? Only Mike White and Danny McBride know for sure.

And speaking of life and art, Trump has decided to possibly go to an 80% tariff on China instead of the standing 145% he has issued. Perhaps it was because he noticed that Putin and Xi had a head-to-head in which they vowed to fight U.S. attempts to contain either or both of them.

Trump, blindsided, declared he might ease off the tariffs on China.

He's says he worships the autocratic styles of them both but he's actually scared sh_tless of them both.

***

It's amazing Trump hasn't had SNL investigated yet. Gawd, they rip him to shreds and it's something beautiful.

Lakers ... Blah, Blah, Blah ... Lost ... Blah, Blah, Blah ... Redick Sucks ... Blah, Blah, Blah ...

Yes, the Schloss-Blog noticed that the Lakers lost in the first round of the NBA playoffs. It's getting to the point, that I don't care who eliminated them anymore? Actually, well, yes I do...

***

What we're hearing on sports-talk TV and radio and on sports-blather social media is...

...Lakers lost to someone

...J.J. Redick made poor coaching decisions

...LeBron is 40

...Luka can't play defense.

Already knew all that if you watched the games. How do you play the same five in the virtual entirety of a second half in two straight playoff games, especially the second time after it flopped miserably the first time?

More importantly, does anyone remember the Timberwolves?

The Lakers traded for Luka, gave up their all-defensive team center to get him, and then couldn't guard anyone in the paint and Luka couldn't guard my 11-year-old basketball-sharp grandson. The Timberwolves targeted him over and over and he failed on defense.

Just thinking out loud but, how's Nico Harrison doing today?

***

A man fell out of the stands in Pittsburgh at the tail end of a Cubs loss to the Pirates.

It's time for upper-deck railings. Baseball stadiums put up netting along foul-line seats to protect fans from line drives. This accident says it's time for protection against falls like this.

***

If Trump claims that China is paying all the tariffs, then why did he call Jeff Bezos and ask him to not have amazon display tariff impact on all things on its website?

***

The Knicks beat the Pistons on Jalen Brunson's late-game heroics in game six of their best-of-seven. Pistons fans are still griping about the foul on Josh Hart of the Knicks in game five ... that wasn't called.

Besides that being not the only foul of that game that wasn't called, including many on the Pistons, that "no call" isn't why the Pistons lost. The Pistons lost because they left themselves in position where that "no call" could've really hurt them, could've cost them a chance to tie or win the game.

I'll bet there are about a dozen places where the Pistons got away with a "no call" where the Knicks could've put some points on the board.

Poor refereeing works both ways. Grow up, Detroit, grow up.

***

Meanwhile, after dramatic price increases, many companies are seeing that their customers are realizing what's happening. In other words, people are discovering that Trump isn't keeping his price-lowering promises. In other words, that he lied to them.

***

In France last month, I found that the French, and most Europeans, still like Americans. They don't like America, especially Trump's America. Especially Trump's tariff policies.

***

Trump likes to take naps, especially at the pope's funeral in a blue (not black) suit. He also falls asleep at his cabinet meetings and as, Nj.com notes, the funeral was the only place Melania let him fall asleep beside her.

***

Speaking of the NFL Draft ... Shedeur Sanders ... blah blah blah ... didn't get drafted yet ... blah blah blah ... because of his inner circle ... blah blah blah ... that no NFL team wanted any piece of having to deal with ... blah blah blah ... and so, please, ESPN ... blah blah blah ... remind us, who's Cam Ward?

***

Me and my buddies, Gary and Keith, as high-schoolers, regularly attended Knicks games. Walt Frazier. Willis Reed. Dave Stallworth. Mike Riordan. Walt Bellamy. Red Holtzman. Bill Bradley.

And Dick Barnett.

Uniquely styled jumper. All-out hustle. NBA champion. Hall-of-Famer.

He died last week at 88. He is already missed. R.I.P.

Canada Doesn't Love Us Anymore ... That Includes Goerge Santos

The Schloss-Blog sees ... well ... everything.

The pope died, which makes "Conclave" the real best picture.

The NFL Draft is over. The Bears won.

No, the Eagles did (they win everything, don't they?). The Giants? The Browns? They got Shedeur, didn't they? Or did he get them?

More in a moment...

Goerge and Amal Clooney are not only still married, they never argue. So they say.

Neither do me and mine ... And now, the Schloss-Blog...

***

... Hey, the pope really did die. Who's next?

The guy from the Congo? Malta? The gal from Hungary? (Just kidding.) OK, the guy from Hungary? Or maybe, just maybe, the guy from ... OMG ... the Vatican?

My money's on the guy from the Vatican, but only the white smoke knows for sure.

Then again, see the movie. See "Conclave."

I didn't give anything away there, did I?

***

Who did win the NFL Draft?

Forget about giving out grades - we don't need no stinkin' grades.

Some say the Browns. They did get Mel Kiper's No. 1-rated prospect and No. 1-rated quarterback (Field Yates' too).

I mean, they did get their quarterback, right? Dillon Gabriel, that is.

No, wait, they got Shedeur Sanders too, who, from what everything me and my draft consultant, Jocelyn, saw, was blackballed because his name is 'Sanders,' doesn't supposedly have an agent and is rumored to be unpopular because of the "inner circle" around him.

In other words, because of his dad and who wants his dad hanging around, waiting for the head coach to get fired so he can move in?

Yeah, yeah, his dad signed an extension at Colorado. So what?

Shedeur is going to be the starting quarterback there before the 2025 season is over. Deion is not going to be the head coach.

Unless Myles Garrett wants him.

***

Meanwhile, back at the pope's funeral, did you see the best part?

No, not the eulogy (OK, there is no formal "eulogy" at a papal funeral even though there actually is one).

No, the best part was French President Macron snubbing, if you will, Trump's handshake attempt, but taking the hand of the Ukraine's Zelensky.

Hey Donald, know how they feel about you in Europe? The same way - no, worse - than we do here in Les Etats-Unis. Your approval ratings have sunk to as low as 42%, or pretty low for any president just 100 days into his presidency.

Congratulations.

***

George and Amal Clooney, who, according to the best sources, are still married, to each other, also say they never argue.

Never.

Do you believe it?

Would CBS News lie to you? Would Gayle King lie to you?

Donald says they would. So, who do you believe: that lying mouthpiece that's on American television everyday?

Or Gayle King?

***

Meta is estimating that it could lose as much as $7 billion this year in ad revenue becuase of Trump's tariffs on China.

Good thing they gave Trump $1 million toward his inauguration. Zuckerberg loves him.

***

George Santos got 87 months - 87 months - for his little masquerade as a congressman, among other things.

All I know is, Rick Pitino could've used him against Kentucky.
